I wonder if it was intentional that they didn't push the update through automatically. Most programs that automatically check for updates (including Firefox) check once per day. The daily check could've happened on most people's browsers a) before Firefox 3 actually hit (it was released 10 AM CST), or b) while the Mozilla servers were taking a hit. I know I tried to automatic update first, and got a timeout error message.

Since I can't take credit for ALL 8 million downloads, I'll just take credit for a little over 7 million...so let's say 7,999,999? That's not being too greedy is it?

Shhhhhh, just because it is a brand new record for the books doesn't mean it isn't impressive! Not that I have anything to go by, but 8 million+ voluntary downloads sounds like a record that may stand for a long time.

I like that Mozilla decided not to push FF3 to auto-update through the browser, so all downloads made were willing and voluntary. This will set a precedent for all future attempts to break the record so they can't "push" the download on people and count them for the record.

..8 million downloads that occurred, easily placing Firefox in the Guinness Book of World Records for the single day download record.

The funny part is, there was no previous record that really needed to be beat. Just about any number would be something to celebrate. :)
