Do You Twitter?
I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I’ve taken the plunge and created an account on Twitter. I honestly do not see the value in constant reminders about what all of my contacts are doing, but so many people (especially bloggers) have been talking about it lately that I feel I will be left behind if I don’t at least check it out. Is this anything more than another type of away message or facebook status? I guess I’ll see soon enough.
So automaticable, do you Twitter? If so, find me! My screen name is: kwegner. I know, pretty original, huh? Anyway, I need some automaticable readers to become my Twitter tweeters, otherwise it is a fairly useless service. So come and find me, or leave your name in the comments!

I don’t understand the whole twitter craze. It seems like it should definitely be a passing fad, but it seems like so many prominent people have jumped on-board, perhaps there’s really something to it. I still think it’s silly, and I’m refusing to give it a try just yet.
However, on yours it says you’ve been posting from Flock– are you using that instead of Firefox? How does it compare?

I always thought it would be a passing fad as well. There is just so little substance with Twitter. I think the only people it probably pays off for in the long run are the power-tweeters who have thousands of followers.
And yes, I am testing out Flock here at work right now. I wanted to see what it was all about, and since I’m not highly active on Facebook or Flickr I figured the only way to really test out the “social media” aspect of Flock was to join something else, and Twitter just seemed like the natural route to go after hearing about it so much lately. I’m still up in the air over whether I think it adds a huge amount of value over FireFox…I will probably discuss this in a future post.

I think the power of twitter lies in the possibilities for networking as well as the possibilities for Public Relations.
For example, my goal for using twitter is getting to know my fellow atlanta-based SEOs and get myself out into the community. I’ve been doing SEO in the ATL for 3 years. I don’t know anyone.
I think, however, in the future there will be a market for conducting online PR or Advertising through power users. If you could influence the top tech tweeters, and you had a new product you were launching, you could get instant traffic just like digg, or delicious but with the authority of word of mouth. Not to mention the additional links that would no doubt end up on the blogs of those top tweeter’s followers pointing back to your product website.
Granted, I don’t think the twitter following is strong enough yet to support that sort of Public Relations endeavor, but I believe it will be… or will be when adopted by another network.
Imagine the potential if a community as established and as professional as, say, linkedin established a twitter system? Think of the networking potential as well as the Public Relations potential that could have…

Hey Mike. Great insight there, and I completely agree. The disconnect I was having personally was how the small to medium user gained value out of Twitter. I absolutely see the value in leveraging products & services through power users, but what does someone like me do?
I guess you’ve also answered that question inadvertently…Twitter is another social outlet for like-minded people to meet over, but there is less commitment involved. Unlike Facebook or LinkedIn, relationships aren’t based on how well I know someone. Instead it is about how interested the person is in what I have to say and vice versa.
I’ve been in ATL doing SEO for a much shorter time, but it looks like Twitter has already brought a few of those like-minded folks together. Hi!
