Summer Workout Plan

Tag: execiseScott Wegner @ 3:10 pm

The weather is finally starting to turn here in Illinois and we’re feeling the effects of Spring. I brought my bike out of hibernation, and I’m finding excuses to spend more and more time outside. I’ve also started running whenever I get the chance, and it’s been great so far. I want to keep running and working out over summer while the weather’s nice, so I’ve been putting together something of a “workout plan”. Here’s the deal:

I’d like to work out four times a week, starting easy and gradually increasing the workout week-by-week. Rather than guaging my runs by distance, I’d like to time them, and incrementally increase the time as I go on. Weather permitting, it’ll go as follows:

  • Monday: Run
  • Wednesday: Swim
  • Thursday: Run
  • Saturday: Bike

We have a pretty nice pool here, so I’d like to get in a little swimming, when I can. Also, I enjoy biking, so I threw that in there as well. We have about 15 weeks in summer. I’ll be starting out with 20-minute workouts, and increase by 2 minutes every week. That means by the end of summer I should be doing 50-minute workouts, which is a good goal for me.

I’m posting this here mostly because hitting your goals is easier when you write it down, and tell others about it. Is anybody else running this summer? Do you have a workout plan? Share it here, we’ll start an online running club.

I like this idea, especially for the self motivation part. Maybe you should commit to also updating us every 2 weeks or so on your progress, that way any obstacles, achievements, or shortfalls will be public and will serve as further motivation. Just an idea.

I wish I had more time in my day because I feel like I really could motivate myself to work out more, but I feel so lethargic after work and I always seem short on time anyway. See me making up excuses already? Not a good sign.

Oh, and summer here means perpetual 100 degree weather. That is not fun either.

PS the picture you found for this is HILARIOUS. I hope you know that guy.

Hah, unfortunately I don’t know the person in the picture, it was just a good find on Flickr.

I don’t have much time either, but I plan on waking up early and doing my runs before work. It’s not too much out of my day (30 minutes earlier in the mornings to start out), and it really helps you wake up in the morning.

This has guilted me into going to for a run. Thanks, I think.
