Sneak Peak: Wosaic

Tag: softwareScott Wegner @ 5:44 pm

A friend and I have been working on a software project called Wosaic, that is due for its first beta release pretty soon, and I’m pretty excited about it.

Wosaic is basically a software utility that allows you to make mosaics based on your own digital photos. It’s released under an open-source license, so will be free to download as binary or source. Right now, we can draw sub-images from either Flickr or Facebook– pretty cool stuff. Click on the image above to zoom in and see the power of it.

We’re hoping to have our first preview release next week, but you can always grab the code from the project website. Click on the image above to enlarge it and see the power of Wosaic.

Have you thought about integrating this with your previous app Mitra? It might be cool to be able to pick and choose who you want to be in the pictures as well. Maybe it would even be better to envelop Mitra into Wosaic, giving it more robust options for facebook photos.

Just the first thing that came to my mind.

Second thought…between Mitra and now Wosaic, it seems that you have an affinity for the use of photos online. Could this be a personal calling, or just coincidence?

    That is all.

Mitra was a fun project while I was working on it, but at this point it’s really out-dated, and just needs to die at this point. The same technology now exists within Facebook, and the code that it’s built on is really ugly.

Right now there is a Facebook plugin within Wosaic, and I think that we could make it more robust.

As far as the affinity for photos– this current project was actually first presented to me by a friend, and we started working on it together. However, I do think photo-related projects are particularly fun because it’s very easy to see the results, and they are very widely used.
